exposure on adjustment brush

I want to lighten the exposure in a small area using the adjustment brush. When I try, the exposure for the entire image changes. Here are the steps I am following. Please tell me what I am doing wrong.
1. I go to adjustment brush
2. I click New
3. I change the exposure slider

When I change the exposure slider, the whole image is changing, whereas I just want to paint in one area.
