Have you looked in:
Help >> Activate to see if you can enter the serial number there.
Normally when you use a trial version, you get pop-ups to buy the product and at that point you can enter your serial number to activate the product.
Make sure you are online when you are entering the serial number as Adobe servers need to register the numbers to your account for future reference.
