what is the easiest way to use channel masking with black studio background and hair is dark brown

I need to mask out two people that were shot in a studio with a black backdrop, however all the white backdrop shots I can handle with no problem.  I'm having a hard time with the black backdrop and channel masking, any help will do?   Thanks!
