I am attempting to import photos and they will not import and are grayed out

I am trying to import a folder with subfolders and it will show bringing in 4,000 or so and then it counts backwards and does not import any of them.  I can see the photos if I try to import a folder, but they are grayed out.  What am I doing wrong?
