I am glad Adobe does not waste their time and our money maintaining legacy versions of Lightroom software (e.g. retrofitting support for native raws of new cameras..).
Forcing you to convert to DNG if you want to keep using a legacy version seems like a very reasonable compromise to me.
My advice? if you can't afford a Lightroom upgrade and a D610, consider a different camera model.
